We got talking to Shannon from Mischievous Mutts Shop; maker of handmade dog leads, collars and bandanas! Shannon will be joining us for our September 2nd Street Food & Makers Market in Brighton. We may have gone over board with the cute dog pictures but who's complaining?!
So why did you start Mischievous Mutts Shop?
I'd always been passionate about animals and a keen creator since I was small, I was 'that' kid that tried to make marvelous creations out of the household recycling, but starting a shop had never crossed my mind at all. Until we brought a small bundle of cheekiness back from our family holiday to Cornwall on the 14th August 2015 and named him Loki. I'd seen on Instagram all these amazing companies selling dog bandanas in such incredible designs and while at my local fabric shop I came across a blue plaid material, brought half a meter and decided to try and create one for my Loki. People were asking me where I'd got it while I was out on walks with him and eventually I dived into starting my own Etsy shop on the 5th April 2016.
How has your shop developed since then?
Mischievous Mutts Shop (MMS) has come on leaps and bounds since I started and I'm blown away by the amount of support I've been given across social media and from people I meet. I started selling collars in July 2016 and they have taken off massively, my most popular being my galaxy designs, the Laika and Galactic. If anything I'm selling more collars than bandanas nowadays! I'm also launching a range of matching leads and human bracelets which I'm hoping to be popular, the response to the sneak peeks I have been posting on my Instagram story have been really positive!
We love your galaxy collars! But what's your favourite thing to make?
Collars must be my favourite thing to create at the moment. I love seeing all the variations in sizes for all different kind of dogs out there. But since I've been creating prototypes for my bracelets I've really been enjoying making something a little smaller and elegant, it's a nice change from creating a load of collars for orders! I also really like packaging up all my online orders, making things look perfect and personal is so rewarding for me.
What would you say is your favourite thing about selling at craft fairs?
Honestly I've only ever attended one craft fair as a stallholder before this and that one was the beginning of December last year. Although I was totally nervous and had no idea what to expect I'm so glad I took the opportunity. The atmosphere of fairs is amazing, the bustling people, the music, and the friendliness of other traders and members of the public. I find them a lot more personal, yeah its great to be able to connect with people on social media and answer questions over messages, but there is something so much better about being face to face with the public. You're able to get to know them (and get to know their dogs!) and they are able to see how passionate small business owners are about their businesses. I'm really looking forward to the September fair and I'm hoping to meet a lot of wonderful people and their dogs as I'm in an outside pitch!
Will you be offering anything special at our Street Food & Makers Market?
I will! I'll be offering exclusive Paper Daisy packages with beautiful autumn themed patterns. The packages will include collars, bandanas, leads and bracelets. This pattern won't be available in the shop either so you'll have to snap them up on the day! As well as this I'll also bring along bandanas, collars, leads, bracelets and fleece tug toys.

You can also find them on Facebook & Instagram so why not give them a follow? We can highly recommend their feed for adorable dog pictures, which is what Instagram is for...right?
