Meet our Paper Daisy trader Freyelli, you'll find Ellie at our Easter Boutique Market in Brighton on April 15th.
What made you start Freyelli?
I studied Fashion Design at Nottingham Trent University and subsequently worked in the fashion industry for 12 years before I started my textile artwork. When my daughter was 1 years old she was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. With the extra care that she needed I knew I couldn't go back to my old job, so I started painting and making.
What inspires your work?
I live in Brighton on the south coast with my husband and two small children . My artwork is inspired by my family life here in Brighton, and the beautiful scenery along the South coast and Sussex South Downs, and the forever changing colours of the seasons. As a fashion designer I travelled extensively across the globe, the plethora of cultures I had experienced have strongly influenced my current work. Through the subtle use of textile print, embroidery, embellishment and hand painted techniques, I hope my work brings to life the natural beauty and family life from
living on south coast and Sussex Downs.
Which types of materials do you use in your unique work?
I mainly work hand painting onto canvas/twill cottons or silks, adding mono printing with plants and flowers making each piece truly unique, then adding applique and freehand machine embroidery. Making original textile artwork, textile vase sleeves and cushions. I also make fabric photographs with freehand embroidery. I realised I had so many beautiful photos of my family, Brighton and scenic photos from holidays that I wanted to turn them into something special. To my delight, it really brought the pictures alive, adding movement, texture and mostly a sense of atmosphere. I fell in love with this process and knew I could achieve this with anyone's photograph image, creating a truly personal and individual piece of textile artwork for someone. I am often commissioned with this type of textile artwork, and I love that it is so different every time.
